NextImg:The Corner: Glynis Johns, R.I.P.

Glynis Johns, the British actress, has died, aged 100. Johns had a remarkable career, spanning eight decades, both in film and on stage. She’s well known for playing Desiree Armfeldt in Stephen Sondheim’s 1973 A Little Night Music, for which she won a Tony Award. Sondheim wrote the iconic hit “Send in the Clowns” with Johns’s distinct voice in mind.

And then of course, for playing Mrs. Banks in the original 1964 Mary Poppins movie. “Sister Suffragette” remains one of my favorite musical numbers, and the energy that Johns brought to the part is contagious.

May she rest in peace.
