NextImg:The Corner: Getting to the Bottom of the Biden Business

“Behind every great fortune lies a great crime,” French author Honoré de Balzac (sort of) said. It’s not always true. But in the case of the Biden family, every day seems to bring more evidence of its verity. The wealth enjoyed by this clan seems to have largely derived from trading off the name and reputation — such as it is, or was — of Joe Biden, the ancient political mediocrity at its center.

How great the fortune, we already have a pretty good idea. Rich Lowry noted a recent report that found “foreign entities sent $24 million sloshing around Biden accounts, including almost two dozen shell companies, between 2014 and 2019.” Nine members of the Biden family have received foreign-deal payments — including one grandchild. If the average family is lucky enough, grandkids are grateful to receive a Christmas gift from grandma and grandpa. The Biden family outdoes this in spectacularly sordid fashion.

Our current webathon is devoted to our coverage of this unspooling scandal. I don’t know about you, but without the intrepid efforts of Andy McCarthy, I would get lost in the tangled web of overseas business arrangements and shell companies that passes for the Biden family “business.” Brittany Bernstein’s dogged and indispensable reporting on House Oversight Committee chairman James Comer’s investigation is similarly illuminating.

We’re also committed to holding Joe Biden accountable. Read Rich’s account above. Or read Noah Rothman’s observation that the House impeachment inquiry may yield more than Democrats expect. Or read Charles C. W. Cooke’s relentless parsing of the unavoidable implications of Biden’s actions. Or read anything else we’ve written about Biden.

We’ve been hell on the notion that Biden is some folksy, honest, and humble paragon of virtue. And we can’t keep at it without your support.

Some of you, aware of this, have already donated. James, tossing $50 in our jar, expresses his gratitude simply. “Go Andy! Depending on you.”

Also contributing $50, Stephen leaves an exhortation: “We need to ensure that our government provides us with minimal and honest representation. National Review, more than any other media member, highlights the news that I need to hold my representatives accountable. Keep up the good work!” We will, Stephen, thanks to you.

An anonymous contributor sends us $100 and this praise: “Thank you for the outstanding analysis and exquisite writing. Andy McCarthy should be required reading for all Americans and particularly for everyone in government!” Would that it were so.

These are only a few of the good people who have sent some funds our way. We are grateful for every dollar, and will be thrilled about every dollar more. To be sure, these are transfers of money on a much smaller scale than the Bidens are used to, but important to us all the same.

With your help, we can continue to be all over the crimes behind the Biden family fortune.
