Most colleges and universities have succumbed to the DEI mania with “instruction” that propounds this divisive and destructive ideology. Many faculty members and administrators are eager to show how devoted they are to transforming America, a nation they believe is the scourge of the Earth.
Typical in that regard is Virginia’s George Mason University, which is on the verge of adopting a requirement for undergrads that they must take two courses designated as “Just Societies” courses. This would mean that a good percentage of students’ general education would be given over to DEI propaganda.
A number of faculty members have objected, and one of them is economics professor Bryan Caplan. In today’s Martin Center article, he argues that this move is Orwellian. He presents a powerful case. Here’s one slice:
First, the requirement plainly takes the correctness of the DEI view of justice for granted. How can you possibly “ensure an accurate understanding” of DEI while granting that it might be a smokescreen for horrible injustice? Are we supposed to imagine the professors declaring, “Let’s respectfully engage with the view that I’m engaged in radical leftist indoctrination”? Can you seriously imagine the faculty musing, “Maybe DEI itself is the obstacle to justice and equity we need to address. Maybe the best way to address these obstacles is to get rid of classes like mine. Let’s consider the arguments”?
GMU’s administration is not the least bit interested in debating the intellectual merits of its plan with people like Caplan. The one ray of light is that the university’s board has temporarily shelved “Just Societies,” but Caplan is sure it will come back until the “progressives” get their way and push GMU further into the swamp of leftist indoctrination.
