Spotted on the Senate side of the U.S. Capitol complex this evening: former New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu. His trip to Washington, D.C., this week comes amid speculation about whether the Republican will run for retiring Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen’s seat in 2026.
Pressed by reporters whether he’s meeting with Senate GOP Leader John Thune this week, Sununu said he’s here for a “tour” of the U.S. Capitol and is meeting a “whole bunch of people.” About a Senate run? “Oh, about everything,” he joked.
It’s never easy to convince chief executives to run for a seat in a 100-member legislative body. (Paging Georgia Governor Brian Kemp!) That task grows more difficult for former Republican governors in bluer-leaning states like New Hampshire. And recall that Sununu spent quite a bit of time teasing a potential 2024 White House run but never ended up throwing his hat in the ring, instead opting to spend his political capital backing Nikki Haley’s unsuccessful run.
But Sununu is well-liked and of course well-known in the state, and Senate Republicans would love for him to help them make New Hampshire competitive in the midterms. If he runs for Shaheen’s open seat, Republicans will have another strong pickup opportunity in 2026 beyond Georgia (where Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff is expected to face tough competition) and Michigan (where Democratic Senator Gary Peters is retiring).
