Americans work more hours than Europeans, a fact that can lead to gloating on both sides of the Atlantic. On the latest episode of my American Institute for Economic Research podcast, Econception, George Mason University economics professor Garett Jones argues that Europeans should work more. We use his recent Capital Matters article as a jumping-off point to talk about labor markets and innovation around the world.
Next, I talk about why you pay higher interest rates than banks. It should be obvious, but Senators Hawley and Sanders think you don’t know the answer, so I figured it’s worth addressing.
I also discuss a Hawaiian rum company’s efforts to end the Jones Act, one of our country’s worst protectionist laws. It is suing the government on the grounds that the law unconstitutionally discriminates against Hawaii’s ports, making it harder for them to ship their rum around the world.
For the Paper of the Episode, Jones picked “Savings behavior among immigrants and their U.S.-born children: A test of the culture-transplant model,” by Jason Richwine of the Center for Immigration Studies.
