Melania Trump announced on Tuesday night that her mother, Amalija Knavs, has died at the age of 78.
The former first lady had been looking after her sick mother since at least the turn of the year, missing the Mar-a-Lago New Year celebration. Donald Trump said at the time, “Melania — great first lady, so popular, the people love her — she’s now in the hospital with her mother. Her mother, Amalija, is very ill, but hopefully, she’ll be recovering.”
Amalija, born in 1945 and raised in Slovenia, was a patternmaker at the former children’s clothing manufacturer Jutranjka. Amalija and her husband, Viktor, moved to the U.S. from Slovenia in 2006 following Melania’s achieving citizenship. The pair would become citizens themselves in 2018.
While little is known about Amalija’s personal life, the Knavs insisted upon secretly baptizing their children into the Catholic Church in Amalija’s hometown of Raka despite the Communist Party’s prohibiting the practice of religion.
