If you’re a mom, you probably are one. If you know one, make sure she knows she’s one. Just a thought from today’s edition of The Lifeline, our new pro-life newsletter. (Sign up to receive it weekly — it’s free — here. Click here for the latest edition.)
And, more important: Do girls and young women know what mothers are capable of? With a little support? We should make sure moms have more than a little support — an outpouring of love — but abortion sells women short. Her baby is eliminated most often because she’s led to believe motherhood can’t be done. Financially, or otherwise. We had better eliminate the financial problem — as a matter of family love, friendship, being a good neighbor, charity, policy, culture . . . And she needs to know she’s amazing. Too many women — and girls — just don’t know this.
I often talk about how the Sisters of Life, who walk with mothers as a matter of their lives, celebrate birthdays with a joy unlike any other that I’ve rarely seen and experienced. They know that women and men often have never had a proper birthday, especially as adults. It might seem a small thing, but if no one has ever celebrated your birthday — if you don’t know what a gift your life is — how are you going to come to welcome a new life into yours?
Celebrate birthdays. Celebrate mothers — including birth mothers. Celebrate feminine genius — the unique gift that women are. Too much of our culture is about denying the difference, suggesting it’s something to be overcome.
