NextImg:The Corner: Deserving Winners at This Year’s Tony Awards

One of the benefits of living in New York City is that Broadway is at your fingertips. That means that if, on any given evening, you haven’t got plans, you can usually get last-minute tickets to shows that normally cost hundreds of dollars.

I am appreciative of this fact when considering this year’s Tony Awards. Though I had not seen all the shows nominated, I’d seen enough to have an opinion on a few of the winners.

Merrily We Roll Along, the production of a 1981 Stephen Sondheim flop, deservedly won best musical revival. The show also helped revive Daniel Radcliffe, who won best featured actor for his supporting role. Surprising fact: Radcliffe is a decent singer.

Appropriate, the revival of Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ 2009 play about a dysfunctional family’s reunion after the death of its patriarch, won best play revival. This, too, was deserved. Sarah Paulson won lead actress. Paulson as “Toni” basically screams herself hoarse for two and a half hours in an excruciating yet gripping performance as a woman on the verge of a mental breakdown. Doesn’t sound fun, I know but, in a dark twisted way, it is. . . .

I also agreed with the decision to award The Great Gatsby best costume design. I’ve been disappointed many times turning up to a show expecting a dazzling spectacle and getting a small budget masquerading as “minimalism.” The Great Gatsby — a feast for the eyes! — delivered.
