DeSantis showed more leg in an interview with Piers Morgan on how he’s going to go after Trump. Putting together what the governor has done the last couple of weeks, it looks like his approach is going to be trying to match or surpass Trump on the right on substantive questions (pandemic response, Ukraine, education), while making a more conventional, non-ideological critique on character, competence, and electability. This makes sense in theory. Trump didn’t win the 2016 nomination by just going to the right — he was to the right of the other candidates on some questions and to the left on others. Similarly, the DeSantis coalition is going to need not just former Trumpists and conservatives, but self-identified “somewhat conservatives” and “moderates.” Now, unfortunately, many Republicans haven’t wanted to hear the conventional critiques of Trump up to this point — although few Republican officeholders with credibility have dared make them.
