On this week’s second edition of The Editors, Rich, Charlie, and Maddy discuss the recent chaos in Chicago.

Chicago leadership may reject the term “mayhem” to describe the looting, burning, and assaults, but Maddy pushes back. “This is what we’ve come to expect from — not just in terms of the violence and nihilism of youth in many of these places — but what we’ve come to expect from progressive leadership.” We can’t just call something what it is anymore, and “it always makes me think of that song ‘[Gee] Officer Krupke’ from West Side Story where it’s like, you know, they go through all the reasons why bad behavior is just misunderstood.”

Charlie agrees: “They’re obsessed with placing . . . groups into hierarchies and matrices,” he says, “and the ultimate consequence of doing that is that you remove from people agency. . . . And I think not only is that crazy when it comes to the question of the rule of law and public order, it’s incredibly offensive in that it is people who are not mere representatives of some group, but are individuals. And it is assuming that they have no control over their own destiny.”
