National Review senior editor Charles C. W. Cooke, on today’s edition of The Editors, said that all of the people vying for the mayorship of New York City are bad options — but Zohran Mamdani is a particularly awful one.

“He’s a kook,” said Cooke, “and he absorbs bad ideas, be they economic, or philosophical, or geopolitical.”

Cooke was perplexed at how NYC’s population can continue, year after year, to consider unqualified people for this position. “We don’t know very often how to deal with novel circumstances . . . but in this case, we know how to run New York. . . . New York, although thankfully it is not as bad as it was in the ’70s and ’80s, fixed its problem, wrote down how it had done it, and then, when it had gone back to being tolerable for the people who lived there, abandoned all of the policies that had put it back on the right course.”

This is “irresponsible” on the part of the city’s voters, said Cooke. “They cannot claim ignorance. This guy doesn’t have what it takes to make New York a safe, prosperous, attractive place.”
