NextImg:The Corner: Cooke: There’s Nothing Wrong with Arresting Judges Who’ve Allegedly Committed Crimes

National Review senior editor Charles C. W. Cooke, on today’s edition of The Editors, pushed back on claims by progressive politicians that Donald Trump “is now arresting judges he doesn’t like” and attacking “separation of powers.”

“Senator Tina Smith said that Donald Trump is now arresting judges he doesn’t like. There’s no evidence of that,” he said. “There’s no suggestion of that. There was a process followed here with paperwork and accusations.”

Cooke stressed that the Wisconsin judge accused of helping an illegal immigrant evade arrest should be allowed her full due process rights and that “no one has suggested that’s not going to happen either.”

“The line that was trotted out most frequently by Amy Klobuchar and Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey and others was that this was an attack on separation of powers,” Cooke said. “The opposite is in fact true. If we had a system in this country in which judges, purely by virtue of their position, were exempt from the enforcement of law, we would have a separation of powers problem.”
