NextImg:The Corner: Congressional GOP Leaders to Meet with Trump Today on Legislative Agenda

Another big day today in Washington after Donald Trump’s Day One executive order blitz: Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune are scheduled to meet with the president in the White House this afternoon to chat about their legislative priorities heading into the new year, a source familiar with the matter confirms to National Review.

After that closed-door meeting, Trump will then host a larger huddle with a host of other congressional Republican leaders who will be key to muscling his agenda across the finish line, including House Majority Leader Steve Scalise and Senate GOP Whip John Barrasso.

Congressional Republican leaders are eager to discuss how they can work with the president to quickly pass his 100-day legislative agenda, people briefed on the plans tell National Review. The discussions are expected to be wide-ranging, and are likely to focus on different paths forward to slash spending, extend the 2017 tax cuts, enact Trump’s legislative priorities relating to border security, energy, and defense, and address the debt ceiling and March 14 government funding deadline.

As National Review has reported at length, congressional Republican leaders have yet to settle on a reconciliation strategy. In a private meeting with Trump earlier this month, Senate Republicans advised the president to keep a two-track reconciliation strategy on the table to get an early win on energy, border, and defense, and punt a complicated tax fight to later in the year. House leaders, meanwhile, have continued to push forward with their “one big beautiful bill” approach.
