There are nuts and fools everywhere, but Khymani James, the “kill the Zionists” protest leader at Columbia, seems to be a particular product of this time and place in elite college education. There was his sense of entitlement in defending his nutty views in his disciplinary hearing. There were his painfully simplistic and dumb attempts at moral reasoning. There are all his pronouns, covering the waterfront with he/she/they. There is his identification as “anticapitalist” and “anti-imperialist” and his professed hatred for white people. And, of course, there’s his passionate anti-Zionism. He could be forgiven for wondering what he’s done wrong, besides taking things a bit too far. Isn’t much of the academy geared to creating and catering to the likes of Khymani James?
