NextImg:The Corner: College Faculty Hurt by Inflation

College faculty members are losing purchasing power due to inflation. Many of them are supporters of the economic meddling that causes inflation, so you might say, “So what?” But not all profs are leftists, and we shouldn’t wish misfortune even on the worst of them.

In today’s Martin Center article, Grace Hall looks at a recent AAUP report on the impact of inflation.

She writes:

This 4.1 percent nominal increase represents the highest single-year rise in professorial salaries since 1991. Yet the inflation afflicting the Biden economy has not only erased that gain but has actually forced professorial purchasing power in the opposite direction. This is the third year in a row that the average professor’s spending power has dropped.

Colleges could pay faculty more if they would economize elsewhere, especially on administration, Hall observes. Right — and they could pay their useful faculty more if they stopped wasting money on those who teach useless subjects that are about ideology rather than bodies of knowledge or marketable skills.
