“FRIENDS. PARTNERS. ALLIES. NEIGHBORS.”

So proclaim the banners freshly raised on the Canadian Embassy, a 1989 brutalist behemoth in downtown D.C. As the only country with an embassy on Pennsylvania Avenue (the street that connects the White House and the Capitol), Canada enjoys proximity to the heart of American governance just as it enjoys proximity to America itself.

The cheerful display also graces the embassy’s Instagram — the first three squares of the account celebrate “Friends. Partners. Allies,” with stars and maple leaves interwoven throughout the red-and-white graphic. Last week, the Canadian Embassy launched its Presidents and Prime Ministers exhibit, which showcases “The Legacy of Canada-U.S. Leadership.” The embassy posted the launch on social media:

Explore the unique partnership between Canada and the United States through the lens of our leaders. Our new exhibit, Presidents and Prime Ministers: A Legacy of Leadership, highlights pivotal moments, decisions, and collaborations that have shaped our shared history and strengthened the bond between our two nations ????????????????

While the exhibit was likely planned well in advance of last week’s inauguration, the visual strikes a humorous note. As Rich Lowry wrote, “In recent weeks, Trump has mused about Canada becoming the 51st state, posted an artificially generated image of himself beside a Canadian flag atop a mountain, staring heroically into the distance, and referred to Trudeau, amusingly, as ‘governor.'” And that’s not to mention Trump’s Day One promise to inflict 25 percent tariffs on products from Canada and Mexico. The embassy’s upbeat display does make it seem as though Trump’s threats have made our northern neighbors eager for friendship bracelets.
