NextImg:The Corner: California Dem Likens Protecting Girls’ Sports to Nazi Germany

California Republicans’ unsuccessful effort to keep boys out of girls’ sports and locker rooms is “reminiscent, to me, of what happened in Nazi Germany in the 1930s,” a Democratic assemblyman said today, during a debate over the state’s so-called gender-inclusive policies.

Here’s the full speech of Assemblyman Rick Chavez Zbur (who was once on California Governor Gavin Newsom‘s short list for attorney general):

“We are moving towards autocracy in this country. In Nazi Germany, transgender people were persecuted, they were barred from public life, they were de-transitioned, they were imprisoned and killed in concentration camps. And the way that it started was the same kinds of things that are happening in this country, by the Trump administration: taking rights away, trying to erase the existence. And I think the thing that I would sort of say is, at the end, one of the things that I was thinking about once I came into this room today, and, you know, I have actually spoken to hundreds of parents of transgender kids, kids that are the most vulnerable kids in our school system, and we have a responsibility to look out for all of those kids. You know, on the Holocaust Memorial Museum, there was a quote that basically said, ‘first they came for socialists and I didn’t speak up because I was not a socialist, then they came for trade unionists, and I did not speak up because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out because I was not a Jew.’ What they left out, is they came for LGBTQ people and transgender people, and no one spoke out. And then they came for me, and there was no one left to speak for me. Our march towards autocracy and fascism in this country is very real. This is part of the right wing playbook to get there, and I want to tell you that I am both saddened and disgusted that this bill was brought today.”

Unbelievable.
