Talk about bad timing. Days after President Trump announced his federal takeover of the nation’s capital earlier this week, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser has left town for . . . Martha’s Vineyard. Even if the trip is for a “family commitment,” as her team alleges, it’s tough to imagine that this news will play well with D.C.’s ultra-Democratic constituency.
“The Mayor has a family commitment and had to pick up her daughter. She will return to the District tomorrow,” the mayor’s office told multiple news outlets on Thursday.
Bowser is in a tough spot here. Earlier this week, she expressed opposition to Trump’s executive moves while also indicating that she planned to comply with his order. And as Attorney General Pam Bondi tells it, she also had a “productive” meeting on Tuesday with Justice Department officials and senior law-enforcement members of the Trump White House. That meeting lasted roughly 45 minutes, as NR reported.
But hours after telling reporters on Tuesday that she planned to assess “how to make the most of the additional officer support” in the district — and even suggesting that an increased law enforcement presence “may be positive” — she later characterized his federal takeover during a town hall as an “authoritarian push,” according to CNN.
