NextImg:The Corner: Biden’s Pardon of Son, Hunter, Earns Him Blowback from Handful of Democrats

A smattering of Democratic lawmakers maintain that Biden’s decision sets a bad precedent, puts personal interest above country, and undermines Americans’ confidence in the justice system.

President Joe Biden’s decision to issue a sweeping pardon of his son, Hunter, Sunday evening for offenses the younger Biden “may have committed or taken part in” since 2014, has earned the president an avalanche of criticism from Republicans, who point out that the White House lied to the American people before the election by repeatedly insisting that this option was never on the table.

And while there is no shortage of Democrats who are either staying mum or shrugging their shoulders in response to the pardon, other members of the president’s party are enraged by the news. In statements on social media Sunday evening and throughout the day Monday, a smattering of Democratic lawmakers across the country announced their personal opposition to the president’s decision, many of them empathizing with Biden’s desire to protect his son while maintaining that his decision sets a bad precedent, puts personal interest above country, and undermines Americans’ confidence in the justice system.

As of this afternoon, the handful of high-profile Democratic lawmakers critical of Biden’s pardon include Governor Jared Polis (D., Colo.), Senators Peter Welch (D., Vt.) and Michael Bennet (D., Colo.), and Representatives Jared Golden (D., Maine), Dean Phillips (D., Minn.), Greg Stanton (D., Ariz.), and Greg Landsman (D., Ohio).

That small chorus of intra-party criticism may grow a bit louder throughout the week as lawmakers return to Washington after their Thanksgiving recess.
