If Christopher Buckley put a scene like this in one of his satirical novels, people would contend it was over the top: Vermont senator Bernie Sanders, on his ‘Fighting Oligarchy’ tour, spoke at the Coachella music festival in Indio, California. Tickets for Coachella start at $539, and VIP tickets go for $1,399. The event is held at the Empire Polo Club. Performers on stage included, Lady Gaga, Green Day, and Megan Thee Stallion, all of whom are multimillionaires, among others.
Alas, Sanders did not begin his remarks by declaring, “whether you realize it or not, all of you are the oligarchy and after the socialist revolution, you will be lined up against the wall and shot!”
Instead, Sanders talked about the need for “economic justice” and criticized President Trump, to great applause from the well-off attendees. Not only were the attendees oblivious to any irony or contradiction, they greeted the senator with the kind of over-the-top euphoric excitement that greeted Elvis in 1959.
Your mileage may vary, but to me this is the most spectacular tone-deaf celebration of socialism since Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard, with a net worth of $1.2 billion, declared himself a socialist and insisted he never intended to become a billionaire. (Don’t you just hate it when you accidentally become a billionaire?)
