NextImg:The Corner: Arguing the Opportunity Costs of Trump’s Birthright Citizenship Push

I had the pleasure of joining Fox News Channel’s Dana Perino and Bill Hemmer on Thursday morning, alongside Boston Globe editorial board member (and NR alum) Carine Hajjar, where we discussed the merits of Donald Trump’s push to neutralize the 14th Amendment’s birthright citizenship provisions via an executive order.

While this initiative is an uphill battle in the courts, I would add that it’s also an uphill battle among Americans, who are broadly opposed to getting rid of the constitutional right to birthright citizenship. It will compel the administration to devote political capital to a messaging campaign, and that will consume time and resources that could be devoted to other matters of far more relevance to voters than this.

Trump talks a lot about “common sense.” Well, what do those possessed of that sort of common sense think of when they think of an illegal immigrant? Is it the child born to non-residents who are in the country legally on student or work visas – a category that this EO targets – or is it the adult population without any legal status and no prospects for self-sufficiency? It’s probably the latter.

What’s more, Trump’s deference to some wild-eyed ideologues with novel legal theories smacks of the ill that plagued the Biden administration. He, too, outsourced his administration to progressive activists with little sense of the world outside their clique, and look at where it got him. It’s inauspicious that Trump doesn’t seem to be learning any lessons from that cautionary tale.
