NextImg:The Corner: AOC and Raskin: Pornography Is Okay for Children, Not for Congress

On Wednesday, Marjorie Taylor Greene displayed to the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability large posters of Hunter Biden — derived from his infamous laptop — showing him engaged in sexual activity.

Though all of the explicit material, along with the faces of Biden’s sexual partners, was censored with large black boxes, and though Greene offered a warning before the display that “I would like to let the committee and everyone watching at home know that parental discretion is advised,” committee Democrats were infuriated. Jamie Raskin called the display “an assault on the dignity of the committee.” AOC accused Republicans of reaching a “new low” by showing “pornographic” images to Congress.

I, for one, was shocked to hear the objections from Representatives Raskin and Ocasio-Cortez. Both have vigorously attacked Republicans, most notably Florida governor Ron DeSantis, for their attempts to remove explicit material from young children’s school curricula. In an April 2022 hearing, Raskin specifically blasted Republicans for removing the book Gender Queer from curricula.

A short excerpt from the book (discretion advised):

I got a new strap-on harness today. I can’t wait to put it on you. I can’t wait to have your c*** in my mouth—I’m going to give you the bl*wjob of your life. Then I want you inside me.

The scene is illustrated on the following page (in contrast with Greene’s presentation, there are no black boxes over illustrations of genitalia).

This past March, AOC delivered an impassioned speech on the House floor accusing Republicans of “fascism” for removing such materials from schools. This was only two weeks after news broadcasts were forced to cut off a DeSantis video presentation (again, discretion advised) detailing the material that had been removed. Gender Queer was featured prominently.

Of course, we assume that the kind of material being shown to ten-year-olds must also be appropriate for members of Congress. But maybe Raskin and AOC are arguing instead that they are less mature than third-graders. Points for honesty, I suppose.
