NextImg:The Corner: Andy’s Picks for NFL Divisional Play-Off Weekend

After an abysmal start, missing the first four games on Wild-Card Weekend, I’m riding an improbably six-game winning streak, including a sweep of the four contests in the divisional play-offs last weekend. Now, we head into the conference championships . . . and I’m going to make the mistake of going with my heart, which is not really what my head is telling me. (On the other hand, last weekend my head told me to pick the Bills over the Chiefs as Charlie and Phil had done — I still think that was the better pick, but I went with the Chiefs anyway, and somehow it worked out.)

Chiefs @ Ravens

All season the Ravens have been a juggernaut, while the Chiefs at times have not seemed like their old selves. Yet, KC has gritted its way to the conference championship game. It’s on the road, but they’re fresh off winning in just about the toughest environment for a road team (at least outside of KC). Lamar Jackson is an incredible talent, especially when he’s moving, but I think the Chiefs’ D can force him to be a pocket passer, where he struggles. On the other side, Patrick Mahomes needs to continue a road play-off push to enter that rarefied Montana/Brady air. I think he gets it done. Give me the Chiefs.

Lions @ 49ers

This is the pick I feel like I’m throwing away, but I’m going to do it anyway. I love the Lions story. Fiery coach Dan Campbell looks like he may run in to play tight end any second, Jared Goff was treated like he was scrap-heap material, but he has become a very solid NFL QB (which, as a Jets fan whose team can’t get a QB no matter how many times it picks a top-five player in the draft, means a lot in my book). The Niners have a terrific defense and so many weapons on offense (even if the amazing Deebo Samuel is not 100 percent this week), but I’m not as sold on Brock Purdy, as much as I love his story. Everything here says Niners, including the fact that the Lions need to travel to San Francisco, but, hell, give me the Lions.

Have a great weekend, and strap in for Sunday — it’s gonna be a blast!
