The Alvin Bragg prosecution is a bad idea on every level and will stress our political and legal system in unpredictable ways.
Is Trump going to stand trial during, say, the Iowa caucuses? If found guilty, is he going to be jailed? What’s the timeframe for that? (I assume appeals would kick it beyond the 2024 election?) What conditions would the Secret Service insist on if Trump goes to jail? What happens if after a conviction Trump declares the process illegitimate and says he’s not going to cooperate? What happens if he’s elected president before the case has run its course?
There should be a high bar for setting out on this path, but instead every indication is that the prosecution is flimsy and political. It may serve Alvin Bragg’s narrow purposes, but the country is going to reap the whirlwind.
