People have been warning that the advent of AI will mean the end of learning second and third languages to speak, because AI tools for instant translation will be widely available.
Those tools are already getting out there. But I’m also seeing things like LanguaTalk, which provides AI powered chat bots for you to practice conversing in your target language. The idea is that there’s no substitute for conversation, but this is often the hardest part of language learners. They either cannot afford a tutor to get enough hours in to acquire the language. Or they are hampered by the understandable embarrassments and humiliations that come with being an adult who is speaking at a childlike level. The robot will correct your mistakes but not judge you.
It seems to me many uses of AI will be like this. There will be an AI that offers to think for you. And an AI that offers to train your thinking.
