I’m not ordinarily one to give real-estate advice, but I know a once-in-lifetime opportunity when I see one. As you might have heard, the Buckley family home in Sharon, Connecticut—yes, that’s why it’s called the Sharon statement—is on the market after 101 years. This is where WFB and the rest of the clan grew up, and so it is inextricably caught up in American political history. It was Bill’s truth north. Shortly after he selected me as editor, he brought me to Great Elm for Thanksgiving with the entire family, a memorable and overwhelming experience, featuring one wide-eyed 29-year-old and about 40 voluble Buckleys.
As a Virginia boy, I’ll pay Sharon and its environs the ultimate compliment by saying it reminds me of God’s country near Charlottesville, all beautiful vistas of greenery and rolling hills.
As for the home, it’s a spectacular 19th century Georgian colonial estate. It’s 8,872 square feet, has a three-story atrium on the first floor, seven en suite bedrooms upstairs, and the kind of flawless design choices throughout that you’d expect of the Buckleys. The home is situated on a 50-acre property—complete with a pool and tennis and pickle ball courts—that is managed by an Association that includes 17 families in eight condos and ten free-standing homes.
You can see photos here. As I said, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
