Worried that AI will take over the world? On this Friday edition of The Editors, Jack Butler (guest-hosting for Rich), Charlie, Jim, and Michael discuss Trump’s recent remarks about AI and announcement of a policy framework to deal with it. And actually, none of them seem too terribly concerned about that doomsday scenario.
Charlie gives a very helpful and in-depth explanation of the tech angle, and begins by saying he believes “that the framework is really good.” “The aim that Trump expressed was for the United States to win the AI race,” says Charlie. “And I think that that is a lofty and salutary end.”
MBD isn’t wildly impressed with the current iterations of AI, saying that “right now, it seems to me to just be tweets that write themselves. And real American wealth is going to be measured in, you know, people that are housing their families and growing and increasing the nice things in their lifestyle, not just adding more and more text to the surface of the earth or to the surface of a microchip or a data center somewhere. So, you know, I’m all for winning this race, but I don’t know if this is the big prize as far as technological races are for the future.”
