One of the great stories of September 11, 2001, that took some time to get told properly was the massive boatlift — much of it volunteer and spontaneous — organized that day to get Manhattan workers to safety during the perilous hours when the island was covered in smoke, ash, and debris, buildings were unstable, and nobody knew if more shoes were yet to drop. It’s worth watching this story. Sadly, Captain Vincent Ardolino — heavily featured here — died in 2018.
