On today’s episode of The Editors, I mentioned that I recently watched The Prince of Egypt. It was a friend’s suggestion, inspired by Passover, that we do so on Saturday.
I remember watching it as a child when it first came out in 1998 (or shortly thereafter). Though it is an animated movie, it is not just for kids. It is a beautifully made adaptation of the Exodus story, replete with awe and wonder.
It boasts one of the best-ever voice casts for an animated film. National Review‘s obituary for Val Kilmer in The Week did not mention his vocal performance as Moses, but it is masterly. Ralph Fiennes put his whole body into voicing Moses’s brother-turned-enemy Ramses (see here). There are also contributions from Michelle Pfeiffer, Sandra Bullock, Jeff Goldblum, Danny Glover, Patrick Stewart, Helen Mirren, Steve Martin, and Martin Short. The soundtrack, moreover, is exquisite.
The Prince of Egypt is definitely worth a watch, or a rewatch.
