As one of his first acts as speaker pro tempore, Representative Patrick McHenry (R., N.C.) is evicting former House speaker Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) from her office.

“Please vacate the space tomorrow, the room will be re-keyed,” an aide on the House Administration Committee emailed Pelosi’s office. The room will be used for “speaker office use,” the email said.

Former speaker Kevin McCarthy (R., Calif.) allowed Pelosi to retain the hideaway office because of her status as speaker emerita. Pelosi said the order to vacate was “a sharp departure from tradition,” pointing out that she allowed former speaker Dennis Hastert “a significantly larger suite of offices for as long as he wished” when she assumed the role.

McHenry was acting speaker for only a few hours before he asked Pelosi to vacate the office. He became speaker pro tempore on Tuesday evening, after eight Republicans and 208 Democrats voted to strip McCarthy of the speakership. McHenry was chosen by McCarthy to succeed him. The House plans to conduct a speaker-candidate forum next week on Tuesday and a final vote on Wednesday.

Staff from House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries’s (D., N.Y.) office helped Pelosi’s staff move their belongings, Politico reported. The California representative is currently in her home state, attending recently deceased Senator Dianne Feinstein’s (D., Calif.) memorial services.

“Sadly, because I am in California to mourn the loss of and pay tribute to my dear friend Dianne Feinstein, I am unable to retrieve my belongings at this time,” she said.
