The Senate voted on Wednesday to advance a bill that would repeal the authorizations for combat operations in Iraq.
The measure to repeal the authorizations from 1991 and 2002 passed the Senate in a 66-30 vote and now heads to the GOP-controlled House.
“Congress has abdicated its powers to the executive for too long,” Senator Tim Kaine (D., Va.) said. “Presidents can do mischief if there are outdated authorizations on the books.”
“We’re closer now than we’ve ever been,” said Kaine, who has pushed to repeal the Iraq war authorizations for several years.
