Republican Representative Don Bacon of Nebraska introduced a resolution on Tuesday to censure Representative Ilhan Omar (D., Minn.) for saying that some Jewish Americans are “pro-genocide” during a visit to Columbia University’s anti-Israel encampment last month.

“It’s unacceptable to say, calling Jewish Americans that are Americans, calling them pro-genocide,” Bacon said, according to The Hill. “It’s just unacceptable. So, I want to take a bold stand.”

While seen as a strong rebuke of Omar, the resolution will not be voted upon immediately because Bacon is not making it privileged. National Review has reached out to Omar’s office for comment.

“I think it is really unfortunate that people don’t care about the fact that all Jewish kids should be kept safe, and that we should not have to tolerate antisemitism or bigotry for all Jewish students, whether they are pro-genocide or anti-genocide,” Omar said when she toured Columbia’s anti-Israel encampment.

Omar, a Muslim lawmaker, is one of Israel’s most ardent opponents in Congress and strongly opposes U.S. support for Israel’s ongoing counteroffensive against Hamas. Last month, she and her far-left allies failed to stop Congress from passing a bipartisan foreign aid package that includes roughly $26 billion worth of aid for Israel and humanitarian assistance in Gaza.

House Republicans removed Omar from the Foreign Affairs Committee at the start of this Congress because of her past antisemitic remarks claiming Jewish donors were buying off politicians. She was widely condemned for those remarks by Republicans and some Democrats.

Former Minneapolis city councilman Don Samuels is running a competitive primary campaign against Omar in Minnesota’s Fifth Congressional District. Two years ago, Omar narrowly defeated Samuels in the Democratic primary despite her national stardom among progressives.

“Once again, we’re in an unfortunate and familiar cycle. Congresswoman Ilhan Omar says something inflammatory and offensive. Republicans, with repeat offenders in their ranks, weaponize it. Rinse and repeat. Our democracy offers the best way to address the harm done by these extremists. It’s not censure, it’s defeat at the ballot box,” Samuels said in a statement last week.

Isra Hirsi, Omar’s daughter and a student at Barnard College, was arrested and suspended last month for participating in Columbia’s anti-Israel encampment. Hirsi is an avowed communist and claimed to be homeless because of her suspension.

The prolonged demonstration at Columbia received national attention and has inspired anti-Israel protests and encampments across the country.

Khymani James, a lead student organizer of Columbia’s encampment, was barred from campus in late April after unearthed video footage circulated where he suggested Zionists should be killed.
