A radical left-wing climate activist group known for disrupting politicians during events is now eligible to receive tax-exempt donations.
The IRS awarded Climate Defiance charitable status, giving it the ability to receive tax-deductible donations and funding from wealthy foundations and donor-advised funds, Politico reported Wednesday, citing an email the group sent to supporters.
“We’re not going to stop doing what we do best: humiliating climate criminals in order to strip them of their power, shake society awake and end the era of fossil fuels,” Climate Defiance founder Michael Greenberg said in an email to supporters.

Climate Defiance’s primary mode of activism is disrupting live events featuring politicians and other high-profile speakers. Its “direct action” method has mostly involved making a scene at events in Washington, D.C., with the stated goal of bringing attention to climate change.
Last week, activists interrupted a discussion with centrist Senator Lisa Murkowski (R., Alaska) by chanting, sitting on stage, getting in Murkowski’s face, and pressuring her to oppose the GOP’s “big, beautiful” bill. Murkowski voted for the bill in the Senate even though she has serious issues with its current iteration and wants the Senate to amend it further.
In October, Climate Defiance activists were widely ridiculed for barging into a luncheon featuring liberal pundit Matthew Yglesias, a critic of the Democratic Party’s far-left flank. Climate Defiance activists have confronted former Senator Joe Manchin (D., W.Va.) on several occasions because of Manchin’s support for fossil fuel extraction as a Democrat from an overwhelmingly red state.
Climate Defiance, which is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization, has a sister organization which operates as a 501(c)(4) under the name Climate Defiance Action. The legal distinction allows Climate Defiance Action to engage directly in electoral politics.
Their stated goal is to move the Overton Window, an academic term for the acceptable range of political opinion, to the left on climate change within the Democratic Party. Climate Defiance believes it can do so by organizing mass turnout events and confronting politicians in order to pressure them.
Like most left-wing environmental groups, Climate Defiance opposes the fossil fuel industry in its entirety and routinely takes progressive positions on other political issues unrelated to its founding mission.
With the return of President Donald Trump to the White House, Climate Defiance began its next phase, “Project 2026” to increase pressure on billionaires and Republicans, rather than focusing solely on Democratic lawmakers.
