More than 150 pro-life groups across all 50 states are calling on the Republican-controlled Congress to defund the abortion industry, including Planned Parenthood, through the upcoming budget reconciliation bill.
Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America is among the top organizations leading the call for defunding “Big Abortion,” which benefits from taxpayer dollars primarily through Medicaid reimbursements.
“In November, the American people gave a mandate – it is time for change in Washington. Since then, the White House is taking swift action to stop the Biden abortion agenda and cut government waste,” the letter reads, highlighting the advantageous opportunity that a Republican trifecta provides in combating the domestic abortion industry.
Planned Parenthood, the single largest abortion provider in the U.S., brought in nearly $700 million from government health services reimbursements and grants in 2023 alone, per its latest annual report. That amount constituted 34 percent of the organization’s total revenue. Additionally, Planned Parenthood performed almost 393,000 abortions that year — a 5 percent increase compared to the previous year.
In 2015 and 2017, Republican lawmakers passed reconciliation bills that prohibited federal funding from going toward abortion providers. Fast forward to 2025, the coalition of pro-life groups says it is “even more urgent” to defund Big Abortion — not only because it harms women and unborn children but also pours millions into lobbying for the medical procedure.
For instance, the Planned Parenthood Action Fund spent $69.5 million during the 2024 election cycle to campaign against President Donald Trump’s anti-abortion stance. Since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022, the advocacy group has actively opposed GOP state measures that restrict or ban abortion.
While Trump enforced the Hyde Amendment to broadly prohibit Medicaid funding for abortions except in cases of rape, incest, or a pregnancy that endangers the mother’s life, some states can still use their own funds to cover abortions for Medicaid beneficiaries beyond Hyde’s limitations.
There are several bills in the House and Senate designed to defund Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers, including legislation re-introduced by Senator Rand Paul (R., Ky.) and co-sponsored by eleven fellow Republicans.
A potential solution also lies in budget reconciliation, a legislative process by which the House can decide on what it wants to cut and fund. The budget then heads to the Senate, where it only needs 51 votes instead of going through the traditional filibuster procedure. The majority Republican Party controls 53 seats in the Senate.
In addition to SBA Pro-Life America, other pro-life leaders that signed the letter include Advancing American Freedom, AFA Action, CatholicVote, the Family Research Council, and seven Wyoming state lawmakers.
“Abortion is the leading cause of death in America and for too long, hardworking Americans have been forced to underwrite it. The pro-life movement is fully united around getting taxpayers out of the brutal abortion industry, which kills 1 million babies and harms countless mothers each year,” SBA Pro-Life America President Marjorie Dannenfelser said in a statement.
“It’s unconscionable that abortion businesses like Planned Parenthood are propped up by hundreds of millions of dollars annually, courtesy of the U.S. taxpayer. Our 150-member-strong coalition representing every state in the country sends a clear message that the abortion industry never deserves our tax dollars and that this Republican Congress has both the support and the duty to defund Big Abortion.”
