California Highway Patrol officers began arresting anti-Israel protesters at the University of California, Los Angeles, early Thursday after the campus encampment turned violent on Tuesday night.
The university issued a message at approximately 3 a.m. local time Thursday warning members of its community to avoid the area of campus the student activists had occupied and announcing that the students, faculty, and staff in the encampment were required to leave.
“The University of California Los Angeles has declared the encampment and all unauthorized tents in Dickson Plaza to be unlawful. The University requires that everyone must leave the encampment and adjacent areas, as well as all unauthorized structures and tents immediately, until further notice,” the statement reads. “If you fail to leave and remain present in the encampment or unauthorized tents or structures in Dickson Plaza, regardless of your purpose for remaining, you will be in violation of the law and those who choose to remain could face sanctions.”
UCLA clarified that faculty and staff would face repercussions in addition to students in the encampment.
“For students, those sanctions could include disciplinary measures such as interim suspension that, after proper due process through the student conduct process, could lead to dismissal,” the statement continued. “Faculty disciplinary actions would be handled through Senate judiciary committees and Academic Affairs and Personnel, and staff employee disciplinary actions would be handled through Human Resources. Please leave the area immediately.”
After a stand-off between police and those in the encampment, California Highway Patrol officers initially withdrew before detaining students, faculty, and staff with zip ties and leading them to corrections buses.
The decision to bring police to campus came after a previous law-enforcement intervention early Wednesday morning after scuffles broke out between the anti-Israel activists and counter-protesters. A pro-Jewish group arrived on the scene after footage emerged of protesters beating a Jewish student unconscious and chasing, attacking, and detaining another inside the encampment. The anti-Israel protesters also appeared to physically block a Jewish student from getting to his classroom on Monday.
UCLA protesters have demanded donations from those outside the university, asking for zip ties, headlamps, shields, and wood to construct barriers. They also requested food, though they specified that bagels were not allowed.
