NextImg:Over Two Dozen Anti-Israel Protesters Arrested for Occupying University of Washington Building

More than two dozen anti-Israel protesters were arrested at the University of Washington Monday for occupying an engineering building.

The anti-Israel demonstrators occupied the Interdisciplinary Engineering building shortly after it closed Monday evening and demanded that UW cut ties with Boeing, which partially funded the building’s construction, because of the company’s ties to the U.S. military and the weaponry used in Gaza.

“Individuals who mostly covered their faces blocked access to two streets outside the building, blocked entrances and exits to the building and ignited fires in two dumpsters on a street outside,” spokesperson Victor Balta told CNN.

NR has reached out to the school for comment.

Boeing provided a $10 million donation to the UW engineering building in August 2022 to support its construction, with a focus on artificial intelligence research.

About 30 individuals were arrested and will face a range of charges, including trespassing, property destruction, and disorderly conduct. Law enforcement began clearing the area outside building several hours after it was occupied. Washington State patrol officers participated in the operation alongside campus police and Seattle police.

It is unclear if the arrested demonstrators were University of Washington students. Anti-Israel student group “Students United for Palestinian Equality and Return” at UW appears to have organized the protest, social media posts show.

“UW STUDENTS ARE OCCUPYING THE BOEING FUNDED ENGINEERING BUILDING ON UW CAMPUS!! Show up right now to the Interdisciplinary Engineering Building (4000 E Stevens Way) to support these brave students,” the group said in a call to action shared Monday.

The call to action instructs students to wear masks and cover up their identifiable features. It references an online manifesto that features praise for Hamas’s mass atrocities against Israel on October 7, 2023, and the student protests on college campuses nationwide. The lengthy screed also calls for UW to completely cut ties with Boeing and end all disciplinary measures for anti-Israel activists.

Balta told CNN the activist group is a “suspended” organization and denounced its antisemitic viewpoints.

“The University will not be intimidated by this sort of offensive and destructive behavior and will continue to oppose antisemitism in all its forms,” Balta said.

UW was one of many campuses nationwide to have anti-Israel protests last year, many of which featured anti-American viewpoints and outright support for the destruction of Israel. The protests were typically featured tent encampments and went for days if not weeks as students urged their universities to divest from businesses with ties to Israel.

The Trump administration is now investigating numerous universities for failing to address campus antisemitism.
