A group of North Carolina Republican lawmakers is seeking more details from the Trump administration about the Federal Emergency Management Administration’s financial support for illegal immigrants.

Representatives Mark Harris, Pat Harrigan, Virginia Foxx, Addison McDowell, and Chuck Edwards wrote a letter Thursday to Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and acting FEMA Administrator Cameron Hamilton requesting information about FEMA’s spending on illegal immigration and whether it used disaster relief funds for that purpose, National Review has learned.

“In the wake of Hurricane Helene, North Carolina has witnessed first-hand the need for serious FEMA reforms to better address the federal response to future natural disasters. There is no doubt that a complete and total overhaul of FEMA is necessary. Therefore, we applaud the President for the much needed call to re-examine FEMA,” the lawmakers wrote.

“While we are grateful for this administration’s leadership, we recognize that Congress also has a duty to conduct oversight and then pass permanent fixes to end FEMA’s mismanagement. That is why we write to you today. We hope to gain greater insight into FEMA’s activities during the Biden Administration that paved the way for the scandalous distribution of funds that prioritized illegal aliens over the American people.”

The letter comes on the heels of DHS firing four FEMA staffers earlier this week for sending $59 million to New York City hotels to shelter illegal immigrants. DHS confirmed Wednesday that it was able to claw back the taxpayer funds after firing FEMA’s chief financial officer, two program analysts, and a grant specialist.

The North Carolina Republicans are asking Noem and Hamilton to provide specifics regarding how FEMA allocated the $59 million and an action plan for preventing it from happening again. Moreover, lawmakers are wondering if FEMA used money from disaster relief fund to support illegal aliens and they are asking for a “full accounting” of how FEMA aided illegal immigration during the Biden administration.

Trump signed an executive order last month mandating a review of FEMA’s operations and political bias inside the agency. FEMA faced significant blowback in November when a staffer in Florida was caught directing emergency first responders to avoid homes with Trump signage following Hurricane Milton.

FEMA’s response to Hurricane Helene, particularly in North Carolina, was heavily scrutinized as residents grappled with once-in-a-century levels of destruction. Trump lambasted FEMA’s handling of recovery efforts in North Carolina during a visit last month and suggested abolishing the agency entirely, with disaster relief money going to state governments to manage instead.

For her part, Noem has voiced support for overhauling FEMA and allowing local officials to take the lead on disaster response.

“I would say yes get rid of FEMA the way it exists today,” Noem said last weekend.

“We still need the resources and the funds and the finances to go to people that have these types of disasters like Hurricane Helene and the fires in California but you need to let the local officials make the decisions on how that is deployed so it can be deployed much quicker and we don’t need the bureaucracy that’s picking and choosing winners.”

Trump’s executive action requires a review council to meet within 90 days of its signage and craft a report on overhauling FEMA within 180 days.
