Former House speaker Nancy Pelosi refused to say if she believes Vice President Kamala Harris is “the best running mate” for President Joe Biden during a Wednesday night appearance on CNN.
During an interview with Anderson Cooper, he asked the California Democratic if Harris was the best running mate for Biden.
“He thinks so, and that’s what matters,” Pelosi responded. That prompted Cooper to press Pelosi on whether she “thought so.” Pelosi again declined to say if she thought Harris was Biden’s best running mate, but instead pivoted, calling the vice president “very politically astute.”
“I don’t think people give her enough credit,” Pelosi said. “People don’t understand, she’s politically astute. Why would she be vice president if she were not?”
Pelosi only mustered a lukewarm response to Cooper’s question. “She’s the vice president of the United States. So, when people say to me, ‘Well, why isn’t she doing this or that?’ I said, because she’s the vice president.”
“That’s the job description. You don’t do that much. You know?”
During an appearance on MSNBC on Thursday morning, Pelosi spoke about Biden’s age. He will turn 81 in November, and would be 86 if he were to win and complete a second term. Pelosi said that “age is a relative thing, as we all know,” and she tried to paint Biden’s as a positive.
“I think that Joe Biden brings such wisdom, judgment, experience to the job of presidency, and he is a great president and will continue to be a great president,” she said.
The former speaker’s comments come less than a week after the 83-year-old announced her 2024 reelection bid.
“Now more than ever our City needs us to advance San Francisco values and further our recovery,” Pelosi wrote on X. “Our country needs America to show the world that our flag is still there, with liberty and justice for ALL. That is why I am running for reelection — and respectfully ask for your vote, Nancy.”
Pelosi was first elected to Congress in 1987.
