Representative Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) underwent a successful hip-replacement surgery on Saturday after sustaining injuries from a fall during an official trip to Luxembourg, her office said in a statement.
A spokesperson for the 84-year-old Democratic lawmaker said Pelosi “is well on the mend” following the surgery at a U.S. military base in Germany, but he did not comment on when she plans to return to the U.S. He previously said she looks forward to returning home soon.
“Speaker Pelosi is grateful to U.S. military staff at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center and medical staff at Hospital Kirchberg for their excellent care and kindness,” Pelosi spokesman Ian Krager said.
“Speaker Pelosi is enjoying the overwhelming outpouring of prayers and well wishes and is ever determined to ensure access to quality health care for all Americans.”
The former House speaker traveled to Luxembourg with over a dozen other members of Congress to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge during World War II. While in the European country, Pelosi tripped and fell while walking down the Grand Ducal Palace’s stairs.
Pelosi reportedly suffered a fractured hip in the accident, which occurred shortly after she took a group photo with other lawmakers and officials. Her spokesman did not reveal any details of the accident or what precipitated it.
“Speaker Emerita Pelosi is currently receiving excellent treatment from doctors and medical professionals,” Krager said on Friday. “She continues to work and regrets that she is unable to attend the remainder of the CODEL engagements to honor the courage of our servicemembers during one of the greatest acts of American heroism in our nation’s history.”
She was first admitted to a hospital in Luxembourg before being taken to Landstuhl, Germany, for surgical treatment.
Pelosi, who has served in Congress since 1987, stepped down as speaker after Democrats lost the House majority in 2022. The California congresswoman recently won reelection, but concerns about her health are growing as the years pass. She has not announced whether she plans to seek another two-year term in 2026.
The incident came in the same week that Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.) fell on Capitol Hill. The 82-year-old Republican lawmaker, who will soon step down from his leadership role, suffered a sprained wrist and a minor cut to his face. McConnell has no plans to retire before the end of his term in January 2027.
