Amid a flood of border crossings under the Biden administration, a majority of voters support a federal program to deport all illegal aliens residing in the United States, a new poll shows.
Nearly six in ten voters, including a third of Democrats and nine in ten Republicans, endorse a hypothetical mass deportation effort, according to a CBS News poll conducted June 5 to June 7.
A similarly sized majority would be in favor of deploying local law enforcement try to apprehend illegal immigrants. About under half of registered voters believe it would be a good idea to erect large government detention centers to process illegal immigrants for potential deportation.
Former president Trump has campaigned on the promise of expelling a large number of illegals immigrants from the country. At a Fox News town hall in January, he vowed to create the “largest deportation effort in the history of our country” if he is reelected in November, saying “we have no choice.”
Trump has also insisted that he will finish the border wall, a project leftover from his first term that Biden discontinued.
In May, Trump pledged to also “immediately deport” foreign students who participate in anti-Israel protests amid the chaotic campus demonstrations that had been disrupting academia.
CBS News host Margaret Brennan appeared flabbergasted Sunday by the poll’s results that there is widespread demand for mass deportations.
“Homeland Security says that President Biden has already deported or repatriated more people in the past year than any year since 2010,” she said. “And then, depending on the details of what’s talked about on the campaign trail, some of what Mr. Trump talks about could be illegal.”
An Axios poll from April similarly found that 51 percent of Americans (including 42 percent of Democrats) say they would support mass deportations of illegal aliens. There was also approval of certain Trump-proposed immigration restrictions, such as the elimination of birthright citizenship, which 30 percent of Democrats and 46 percent of Republicans oppose.
Americans are concerned about illegal immigration primarily because of increased crime and drug trafficking, but also because of burdening taxpayers and threatening national security.
“It doesn’t seem practical, in some sense, to round up children,” Brennan continued. “And then we know that the courts have questioned whether local authorities would have the ability to do it, and federal authorities don’t have the resources. So what exactly do people think they’re supporting?”
