Jair Bolsonaro, the former president of Brazil, announced Wednesday he is willing to attend President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration on January 20 if he can manage to obtain his confiscated passport.

In February 2024, Brazilian supreme court justice Alexandre de Moraes ordered the retention of Bolsonaro’s passport amid a probe into his involvement in an attempted coup after leaving office in January 2023.

Bolsonaro confirmed he received Trump’s inaugural invitation and revealed his lawyer has already appealed to Moraes for the return of the ex-president’s passport. In a post on X, Bolsonaro described Trump’s upcoming second inauguration as an “honorable and important historical event” that he plans on attending if able.

A week after Brazil’s leftist president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was inaugurated, Bolsonaro’s supporters rioted and broke into the nation’s supreme court and other government buildings to protest the transfer of power over allegations of electoral fraud.

The conservative figure’s announcement comes on the two-year anniversary of the January 8 attack, which has drawn comparisons to the U.S. Capitol riot on January 6, 2021.

In June 2023, a Brazilian court barred Bolsonaro from running for political office again until 2030 after concluding he abused his power by using government communication channels to promote claims that the country’s electronic voting systems were vulnerable to hacking and fraud.

He also faces criminal charges for allegedly plotting a coup in addition to allegedly falsifying his Covid-19 vaccination status while in office. Bolsonaro continues to deny any wrongdoing.

Trump and Bolsonaro have had an amicable relationship since the president-elect’s first term in office. Trump even endorsed Bolsonaro for reelection in 2022.

The pair also share similarities regarding the criminal investigations they faced: Both were accused of inciting an insurrection on democracy for questioning the results of their respective elections.

Bolsonaro’s son refers to those same comparisons, describing the politically motivated probes they endured as “disgusting lawfare.”

“Donald Trump certainly identifies himself with Jair Bolsonaro in this sense because he was a victim of it in the United States,” Eduardo Bolsonaro said in a video attached to his father’s social media post before ripping into the judge for ordering the confiscation of the passport.

Notably, Moraes got into a legal feud with Elon Musk last year after the justice suspended X from operating in Brazil. The decision was made over the social media platform’s free speech policy, which allowed pro-Bolsonaro supporters to claim Silva had stolen the country’s October 2022 election. The ban was ultimately lifted after Musk’s X complied with the justice’s demands.
