The Israeli Defense Forces found rocket-propelled grenades, mortar shells, and other Hamas weapons inside a kindergarten and elementary school in northern Gaza, a military spokesman said.

The IDF’s Bislamach and Golani Brigades located the weapons in a raid on Friday. The discovery comes amid claims from Palestinian media and protesters that Israel unjustly targets civilian infrastructure in Gaza.

Although Hamas denies using civilian buildings as military bases, Israeli troops have found multiple weapons caches in schools and hospitals. The Israeli military also found weapons in a kindergarten in Gaza’s Beit Hanoun, the IDF said last week.

Most recently, military forces found a Hamas command center in the basement of Al-Shifa hospital this week, complete with a stash of grenades, suicide vests, and explosives. National Security Council spokesman John Kirby confirmed on Thursday that U.S. intelligence independently determined that Hamas used the hospital as a shield and a base in which to shelter. In a structure adjacent to the hospital complex, the IDF said that it found the body of Yehudit Weiss, one of the hostages Hamas captured in its October 7 rampage. Also near the hospital, the IDF found the body of 19-year-old hostage Noa Marciano.

“And we also found signs that indicate that Hamas held hostages here,” Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said on Monday of Al-Shifa. “This is currently under our investigation. But we also have intelligence that verifies it.”

Gaza doctors also deny claims that Hamas uses hospitals as military bases. Hamas’s vast tunnel network is estimated to stretch 300 miles, however, and the Israeli military says it has found tunnels that connect schools and hospitals in Gaza. Terrorists stockpile weapons, food, and water underground, and use unsuspecting buildings as tunnel entrances. One Israeli hostage who Hamas held captive for 17 days said that she witnessed at least two dozen hostages in the “spider web” of tunnels.
