Israel plans to seize control of the entirety of Gaza and to remain in the territory for an indefinite period, ushering in a new phase in the Jewish state’s long-running war against Hamas.

The plan, which was approved by the Israeli cabinet and announced by Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu, would see the Palestinian population in northern Gaza moved to the territory’s south, where humanitarian aid will be made available.

“We decided on intensified action in Gaza. That was the chief of staff’s recommendation, to move, as he said, toward the defeat of Hamas. He believes this will also help us rescue the hostages. I agree with him,” Netanyahu said.

“There will be movement of the population to protect them,” he added.

The effort will commence after President Trump’s trip to the Middle East later this month, the Associated Press reported. The goal of the plan is to prevent Hamas from distributing humanitarian aid. Israel will reportedly let more aid through under the plan.

The cabinet meeting followed Israeli plans to bar Hamas from the aid distribution process, the AP reported, based on a memo the outlet obtained. That memo contained notes from a meeting between the U.N. and COGAT, the Israeli government entity that oversees governance in Gaza and Judea and Samaria.

The new strategy is based on a proposal by Giora Eiland, a retired Israel Defense Forces general, who argued last year that by moving civilians from the north, Israel would be able to more effectively combat remaining Hamas terrorists in the area, according to the Jerusalem Post.

While 59 hostages are still being held by the terrorist group, Trump recently said that only 24 are still believed to be alive.

The memo said that aid will be distributed through the Kerem Shalom crossing.

Also ahead of the cabinet meeting, Yemen’s Houthi terrorist group launched a missile at Israel, hitting near Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv. Flights were grounded in response.
