Hours after he pleaded not guilty to 37 criminal counts, Donald Trump arrived at his golf club in Bedminster, N.J. and unleashed a torrent of abuse against special counsel Jack Smith and President Joe Biden.
Trump has been accused by Smith and his colleagues of willful retention of national-defense information, conspiracy to obstruct justice, and making false statements, among other things. The former president claimed that this prosecution, like Alvin Bragg’s case against him in Manhattan, is simply election interference.
“Today we witnessed the most evil and heinous abuse of power in the history of our country,” Trump claimed to supporters and donors. “Very sad thing to watch, a corrupt sitting president had his top political opponent arrested on fake and fabricated charges of which he and numerous other presidents would be guilty, right in the middle of a presidential election in which he’s losing very badly.”
Trump highlighted that he is being treated differently that many others in a similar position with respect to classified material, including Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, and also Biden. His former vice president, Mike Pence, was correctly exonerated, explained Trump.
“It’s a political persecution like something straight out of a fascist or communist nation,” explained Trump, adding that he did everything right, followed the law, and they still indicted him. He argued he had the right to handle the boxes which included classified material in the way that he did.
Most legal experts who have analyzed the indictment have called Trump’s mishandling of the documents some of the most egregious they have ever seen. The indictment includes evidence — including an interview transcript — that Trump knew he had possession of “secret” and “highly confidential” documents that he had not declassified. It also alleges that Trump discussed classified military information at the Bedminster Club with individuals who were not authorized to receive it.
If he is reelected, Trump vowed to appoint a “real special prosecutor to go after the most corrupt president in the history of the United States of America, Joe Biden. And the entire Biden crime family.”
Trump also rebuked special counsel Jack Smith and his record as a prosecutor.
“The prosecutor in the case, I will call our case, is a thug. I have named him ‘Deranged Jack Smith,’” said Trump. “He’s a behind the scenes guy, but his record is absolutely atrocious.”
In the past, the former president has repeatedly attacked those charged with investigating him.
“They want to take away my freedom because I will never let them take away your freedom,” explained Trump, adding that he is “the only one who can save this nation.”
