{A} merica never asked to be the Leader of the Free World — we earned it in the wake of World War II. For 80 years, great American leaders have understood that we need not choose between leading on the global stage and solving problems here at home. The truth is that we have done both and must still do both for the security of our country and for the stability of the Free World.
This week, the Senate passed a well-intentioned but flawed bill to rearm Ukraine, resupply Israel, and harden Taiwan. Speaker Mike Johnson has indicated that the House intends to “work its own will” on the bill. House Republicans should work with urgency to find a way forward and refine this timely legislation so critical to our national interest and our allies.
America’s enemies are watching closely to see how much aggression we will tolerate. They are testing our resolve and the depth of our commitment as they map out their sinister plans. Failure to support our friends in their time of need would only signal American weakness and invite further aggression against our friends and interests.
While many have embraced the rising tide of Republican isolationism, Speaker Mike Johnson demonstrated his understanding of what is at stake when he said, “We can’t allow Vladimir Putin to prevail in Ukraine, because I don’t believe it would stop there, and it would probably encourage and empower China to perhaps make a move on Taiwan.” He is right.
At a time when the world is witnessing one foreign-policy disaster after another under the Biden administration, Congress must summon the will to lead and pass a defense-supplemental bill that supports our allies in Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan — three nations that are on the front lines of defending democracy in regions of monumental strategic significance to the United States.
Russia’s unprovoked and brutal invasion of Ukraine has killed or injured hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian men, women, and children. Vladimir Putin is a war criminal who only understands strength. We must meet this moment with American strength, and give the Ukrainians the military support to defend themselves before Putin’s tanks end up crossing into a NATO country where our men and women in uniform would then be required to fight.
Israel is waging a war for its very survival against Hamas intent on its destruction. President Biden says Israel’s response has been “over the top” and continues to pressure our most cherished ally to stand down. America must stand with Israel until it hunts down and destroys Hamas once and for all.
Politics is the art of the possible. Americans know we can achieve our objectives without repeating the mistakes of previous legislation. There are changes to the Senate bill that would be broadly acceptable and make measurable progress toward meeting our national-security objectives and supporting our allies.
In Ukraine, American support should focus on providing only the military aid Ukraine needs to win; European nations can provide non-lethal aid on their own. In Israel, we shouldn’t provide “humanitarian aid” to Hamas and its sympathizers. The Senate bill was right to bar any further funding from going to the corrupt U.N. Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), but there are many other compromised organizations that operate in Gaza, Judea, and Samaria.
And in the face of the worst border crisis in American history, and the failure of the Senate to enact reforms necessary to secure the border, House Republicans should seize this moment to reinstate two effective and popular policies enacted during our administration but canceled by President Biden: Title 42 and Remain in Mexico.
Congress could legislate a Title 42–like turnaway authority, allowing immediate expulsion of illegal immigrants apprehended at the border, and mandate that asylum seekers be required to stay in Mexico while their claims are adjudicated. These two policies alone played a significant role in the dramatic reduction in illegal immigration and asylum abuse in our administration; Congress should restore them.
The Bible says, “To whom much is given, much will be required.” I urge my Republican friends in Congress to set aside the politics of the moment and find a way to support our allies with the military resources they need to defeat their enemies and ours.
America is the Leader of the Free World. If America is not leading the Free World, the Free World is not being led. We don’t need to choose between being Leader of the Free World and solving problems here at home. We can do both and have done both for generations. Anyone who says otherwise has a pretty small view of the greatest nation on earth. It’s time for Congress to lead.
