One day after the bipartisan House Ethics committee released a damning report concluding that there is “substantial evidence” that Representative George Santos committed criminal wrongdoing, Republican Ethics Committee Chairman Michael Guest filed an expulsion resolution to remove him from the chamber.
The House is expected to vote on the expulsion resolution — which requires a two-thirds vote to pass — once lawmakers return from their Thanksgiving recess.
“The evidence uncovered in the Ethics Committee’s Investigative Subcommittee investigation is more than sufficient to warrant punishment and the most appropriate punishment, is expulsion,” Guest said in a statement on Friday. “So, separate from the Committee process and my role as Chairman, I have filed an expulsion resolution.”
Only five members of the U.S. House have been expelled in the institution’s history, and two efforts to expel Santos have already failed this year. But Guest is banking on the likelihood that the contents of this week’s Ethics Committee report will persuade lawmakers that Santos’ alleged crimes is beneath the institution.
As National Review reported on Thursday, the Ethics report found overwhelming evidence that Santos knowingly filed false campaign spending reports with the Federal Election Commission, engaged in fraudulent conduct with a firm called RedStone Strategies LLC, and intentionally violated the Ethics Committee’s financial-disclosure rules. The report also accused Santos of knowingly using campaign funds for personal expenses, including Botox treatments, Sephora skincare products, and the pornography site OnlyFans.”
Santos has pleaded not guilty to a 23-count superseding indictment charging him with wire fraud, false statements, money laundering, and more.
Minutes after the Ethics Committee released its report, Santos said he would not seek another term this cycle.
“I will continue on my mission to serve my constituents up until I am allowed,” Santos wrote in a statement on X. “I will however NOT be seeking re-election for a second term in 2024 as my family deserves better than to be under the gun from the press all the time.”
