In a heated exchange about banning the Chinese social-media platform TikTok, Nikki Haley blasted Vivek Ramaswamy for launching a personal attack involving her daughter.
“I wanna laugh at why Nikki Haley didn’t answer your question, which is about looking at families in the eye. In the last debate, she made fun of me for actually joining TikTok, well her own daughter was using the app for a long time. So you might want to take care of your family first,” the tech entrepreneur said pointedly.
“Leave my daughter out of your voice!” Haley shot back at Ramaswamy. “You’re just scum!”
Ramaswamy went on to argue that the issue of Chinese infiltration of the U.S. tech sector is much broader than just TikTok, which has received particular attention because of its massive user base of American young people and the scale of its data capture.
“The easy answer is actually to say that we’re just gonna ban one app. We gotta go further. We have to ban any U.S. company actually transferring U.S. data to the Chinese,” Ramaswamy said. “Here’s a story most people don’t know. Airbnb, hands over U.S. user data to the CCP [Chinese Communist Party]. Now that’s a U.S.-owned company. This is the problem when you have Republicans that temporarily go the way the winds blow.”
The biotech entrepreneur then denounced Haley for praising China as “our great friend” while serving as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations under President Trump.
“You know, when he talks about me praising China, he [Ramaswamy] doesn’t know the fact that the reason China was praised was because I negotiated with China and Russia the largest set of sanctions against North Korea in a generation,” Haley countered. “That is literally the reason that North Korea stopped testing ballistic missiles. So I said China did good on their part.”
