Former GOP congressman George Santos, who was expelled from his seat after racking up an embarrassingly long list of ethics allegations, starred in an apparent spoof video on Monday advising embattled Democrat Bob Menendez on his similar legal troubles.
Commissioned by Democratic senator John Fetterman, who has been on Menendez’s case since he was accused of a running yearslong bribery scheme as well as other various conspiracy charges, the video features friendly pointers from Santos.
“Hey Bobby!” Santos begins. “Look, I don’t think I need to tell you, but these people that want to make you get in trouble and want to kick you out, and make you run away, you make them put up or shut up! You stand your ground, sir. And don’t get bogged down by all the haters out there. Stay strong! Merry Christmas!”
Over many months, Santos accumulated accusations including 23 criminal counts of conspiracy, wire fraud, falsifying records, money laundering, aggravated identity theft, theft of public funds, lying to the Federal Elections Commission, and lying to the House. Santos never issued a substantive defense, only insisting that he was being unfairly targeted. The vote to expel Santos had 311 House members in favor, including 105 Republicans and 206 Democrats who decided that his record was a stain on the reputation of the institution.
In a caption attached to the video, Fetterman wrote: “I thought my ethically-challenged colleague @BobMenendezNJ could use some encouragement given his substantial legal problems.”
“So, I approached a seasoned expert on the matter to give ‘Bobby from Jersey’ some advice,” he wrote.
The Department of Justice has alleged that Menendez “provided sensitive, non-public U.S. government information to Egyptian officials and otherwise took steps to secretly aid the Government of Egypt.” Thirty-one Democratic senators have urged Menendez to resign, but the senator has refused publicly and in private meetings with colleagues. He has called the indictment “an active smear campaign.” Despite growing belief that Menendez effectively served as an Egyptian spy, he is still on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, although he did step down as chairman after his scandals surfaced.
Fetterman, who has disrupted the usual Capitol Hill dynamics with his staunch support for Israel and condemnation of pro-Palestinian Democrats, argued that Menendez should get the boot after Santos. The Pennsylvania senator has pressed the issue of Menendez far more than any other Democrat in the chamber. On The View last week, Fetterman claimed Menendez “actually did more sinister and serious kinds of things” than Santos did, referring to his alleged collaboration with the Egyptian government.
After Santos’s video went live Monday, the ex-lawmaker retweeted a random comment that read, “john – give your public relations team a raise. LOL.”
