NextImg:‘Endorse Me’: Trump Responds to Pence Dropping Out of 2024 Race

Former president Donald Trump says former vice president Mike Pence, who dropped out of the 2024 presidential race on Saturday, should endorse him.

“People are leaving now and they’re all endorsing me,” Trump told a crowd in Las Vegas. “I don’t know about Mike Pence. He should endorse me. You know why? Because I had a great, successful presidency and he was the vice president.”

“But people in politics can be very disloyal,” Trump went on to say.

After serving together for four years, Trump and Pence had a falling out in the aftermath of the 2020 election and the January 6 Capitol riot. Trump has falsely claimed Pence had the power to overturn the results of the election and blames him for not doing so.

Trump’s comments came hours after Pence announced his exit from the race during a speech at the Republican Jewish Coalition Conference.

“It’s become clear to me it’s not my time,” Pence said. “I’ve decided to suspend my campaign for president effective today.”

“To the American people, I say: this is not my time, but it is still your time,” he added.

A RealClearPolitics polling average showed Pence sitting in fifth place before his decision to drop out, with 3.5 percent support. The frontrunner, Trump, has a 46.5-point lead over Florida governor Ron DeSantis, who sits in second place.

Other 2024 contenders shared kind words about Pence after the former vice president announced his decision.

“The Vice President has been a prayer partner, a friend, and a man of integrity and deep conviction,” Senator Tim Scott (R., S.C.) said in a post on X. “The Republican Party is stronger today because of @Mike_Pence’s leadership. I have no doubt Mike and Karen will continue to serve this nation and honor the Lord in all they do.”

“Vice President Mike Pence is a principled man of faith who has worked tirelessly to advance the conservative cause,” Florida governor Ron DeSantis wrote in a post on X. “Casey and I appreciate Mike and Karen for their willingness to put themselves forward in this campaign and wish the Pence family well in their next steps.”

Former U.S. ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley said Pence has “been a good man of faith.”

“He’s been a good man of service,” Haley told the Republican Jewish Coalition Conference. “He has fought for America, and he has fought for Israel. And we all owe him a debt of gratitude.”

Pence became the second candidate to drop out of the race in the last week; conservative radio host Larry Elder suspended his own campaign days earlier.
