In a bid to re-energize his struggling presidential bid, Governor Ron DeSantis fired campaign manager Generra Peck and appointed his former chief-of-staff James Uthmeier to fill the position.

“People have written Governor DeSantis’s obituary many times,” the new campaign manager, who previously worked for the Trump administration and served as general counsel to DeSantis, wrote in a statement to the Messenger, the outlet which first broke the story.

“From his race against establishment primary candidate Adam Putnam, to his victory over legacy media-favored candidate Andrew Gillum, to his twenty-point win over Charlie Crist, Governor DeSantis has proven that he knows how to win. He’s breaking records on fundraising and has a supporting super PAC with $100 million in the bank and an incredible ground game. Get ready.”

Peck, who will now serve as the governor’s chief strategist moving forward, expressed her support for her new replacement. “Governor DeSantis is running one of the most aggressive early state campaigns in modern history,” Peck told the Messenger. “Our organization welcomes the best of the best and James is one of my closest colleagues and friends — we are better for his joining and providing day to day leadership. This team is built to last and built to win.”

The announcement comes just weeks after the governor’s presidential campaign laid off dozens of staffers in late July amid polling showing DeSantis struggling to gain ground on former President Donald Trump.

The governor’s lackluster performance led many to question his presidential campaign’s use of donor funding. Among the 38 staffers culled at the time from the campaign trail were roughly ten event planners, in addition to the departures of two senior campaign advisers, Dave Abrams and Tucker Obenshain.

“Following a top-to-bottom review of our organization, we have taken additional, aggressive steps to streamline operations and put Ron DeSantis in the strongest position to win this primary and defeat Joe Biden,” then-campaign manager Peck noted in an official statement. “Gov. DeSantis is going to lead the Great American Comeback and we’re ready to hit the ground running as we head into an important month of the campaign.”
